Most launch problems are preparation problems. The server wasn't ready, the announcement didn't land because it was posted at the wrong time, the trailer wasn't uploaded until after the Discord ping went out, the Planet Minecraft listing didn't have a description that explained anything useful.

This checklist is built around the things that actually determine how a launch lands — not the technical setup of the server itself (that's a separate topic), but the marketing, communication, and content side of going live.

Work through it phase by phase. The earlier you start, the more options you have on timing and quality.

Phase 1 Before Launch

Start these at least 2–4 weeks before your opening date — more if you need to commission external work.

01

Define your opening date and commit to it

Everything else depends on this. Set a realistic date that gives you time to complete the list below. Communicate it to your team. Don't move it without good reason.

02

Write a one-paragraph server description

What is your server? Who is it for? What's the one thing that makes it different? This paragraph will be used everywhere — Discord, listing sites, Reddit posts, YouTube description. Write it once, write it well, reuse it.

03

Commission or create your launch trailer

This is the highest-leverage thing on the list. Your trailer should be uploaded and ready at least three days before launch so you have time to review it, share it with staff, and schedule the post. Don't leave this until the week you open. Read our Minecraft trailer guide for what makes one work.

04

Set up or clean up your Discord server

First-time visitors judge your Discord in about ten seconds. Is it clear what your server is? Is there a rules channel, an announcements channel, and a way to get a player role? Delete every unused channel. Pin your trailer and description in the welcome area.

05

Write your Discord welcome message

The bot message (or pinned message) that greets every new member should include what the server is, the opening date or current status, the server IP if live, and links to important channels. Write it as if you're talking to someone who has never heard of you.

06

Create a Planet Minecraft listing

Planet Minecraft is still one of the most-visited Minecraft server discovery sites. Fill in the description properly. Embed your YouTube trailer. Add good screenshots. Use relevant tags. A complete listing outperforms an incomplete one significantly.

07

Submit to at least two other server listing sites

Minecraft Server List, Top Minecraft Servers, and similar sites give you additional discovery surface and backlinks. Each submission takes 10–15 minutes. Do them all at once before launch.

08

Upload your trailer to YouTube with a complete description

YouTube description should include your server IP, Discord invite link, a paragraph about what the server is, opening date, and relevant keywords (your server name, gamemode, year). Add tags. Set a compelling thumbnail — not a default YouTube screenshot.

09

Prepare short-form cuts if you're active on TikTok / Reels / Shorts

A 15–30 second vertical version of your launch trailer is worth having ready. Post it on launch day alongside the full trailer for maximum distribution. If you're working with a trailer producer, ask about format cuts when you commission the main trailer.

10

Brief your staff team on launch timing and responsibilities

Who posts what, and when? Who monitors Discord during the first few hours? Who handles new player questions? Confusion in the first 30 minutes of a launch looks bad. Assign roles clearly and make sure everyone knows the plan.

11

Do a dry run of your server

Run through new-player onboarding yourself with a fresh account. Does the join flow make sense? Are there any crashes, broken plugins, or confusing UI elements? Test the things players will hit in their first 10 minutes.

12

Draft your announcement posts in advance

Write the Discord announcement, the Reddit post, and the social media captions before launch day. On launch day you'll be busy — having copy pre-written means you can post quickly and clearly rather than writing under pressure.

13

Prepare launch-day screenshots

Have 4–6 high-quality in-game screenshots ready to accompany your launch posts. Different angles, different areas of the server. Clean screenshots — no HUD clutter, good lighting, interesting composition.

14

Set up any voting rewards or launch incentives

If you're running a launch event, vote rewards, or early-player perks — have these configured and tested before opening day. A promised perk that doesn't work is a terrible first impression.

Timing note

For most audiences, launching mid-week in the evening (6–9 PM in your target time zone) outperforms weekend morning launches. Check where your target players are located and pick the time when they're most likely to be online and engaged.

Phase 2 Launch Day

Execute in order. Timing coordination matters more than most servers realise.

15

Post your trailer to YouTube (if not already live)

If you scheduled the YouTube video to go public on launch day, verify it went live. This is the asset everything else points to.

16

Open the server and verify it's accessible

Confirm the server is joinable before making any public announcement. Check from an external network — not just from localhost or your internal IP. Have a staff member join to verify.

17

Post the announcement in Discord

Include the server IP, the trailer link, and the key things players need to know. Ping the relevant role. Keep it clear and easy to read — no walls of text. A short, punchy announcement outperforms a long one.

18

Post to Reddit (r/MinecraftServer and relevant subreddits)

Use your pre-written copy. Include the trailer embed, the server IP, and a brief description. Follow subreddit rules — read the sidebar before posting. Respond to every comment in the first hour.

19

Post short-form content to TikTok / Reels / Shorts

If you have vertical cuts ready, post them now. Include your Discord invite in the caption. These platforms index quickly and can drive discovery within hours of posting.

20

Update your server listing pages to show "Now Open"

If your Planet Minecraft listing and other listings were set up before launch, update the status. Change "Opening [date]" to "Now open" and update the description if needed.

21

Have staff online and active in Discord

New players joining your Discord during the launch window need to see an active community. Staff should be visible, answering questions, welcoming players, and keeping energy up. A launch Discord that looks empty is a conversion killer.

22

Monitor for technical issues in real time

Have someone watching server logs or your server management panel during the first two hours. Player spikes at launch can surface problems that didn't appear in testing. Have a plan for common issues (TPS drops, queue problems, plugin conflicts).

Phase 3 After Launch

The launch isn't the end — it's the beginning of the retention and growth phase.

23

Post a "Day 1 recap" or player highlights

Within 24–48 hours of launch, post something that celebrates the community. Screenshots from in-game, player count milestones, interesting moments from the first day. This rewards early players and keeps momentum going for those who haven't joined yet.

24

Follow up with players who engaged with your announcement

Anyone who commented on your Reddit post, replied in Discord, or engaged with your social posts is a warm lead. Thank them. Answer follow-up questions. A personal reply from a staff member keeps people engaged more effectively than any announcement.

25

Check your listing page analytics

Most server listing sites have basic analytics — impressions, clicks, server joins from the listing. Check these in the first week. Which listings are driving traffic? Which ones are not? This tells you where to invest time in the next phase.

26

Ask early players for feedback

Create a simple feedback channel or form. What did players enjoy? What was confusing? What features do they wish existed? First-week players are your most valuable source of information about what's working and what needs attention.

27

Post your next piece of content within 7 days

Maintain posting momentum. An update announcement, a highlight clip, a teaser for an upcoming feature — anything that signals the server is active and evolving. Silence after launch is a common reason players who joined but didn't stick around don't come back.

28

Review YouTube analytics for your trailer

Where did viewers drop off? What traffic sources brought the most watches? What was the average view duration? These numbers help you understand what worked and what to do differently for your next trailer or update video.

29

Plan your first season-end or major update

This sounds premature on day one, but planning cycles matter. If you know your first season runs for 12 weeks, you can start thinking about what the reset announcement will look like, when the next trailer should be commissioned, and how to reward players who were there from the start.

30

Start building your trailer asset library

Every session on your server is an opportunity to capture clips, screenshots, and memorable moments. A folder of good in-game footage makes future trailers faster and cheaper to produce. Capture while the server is at its most active and visually interesting.
